Dangerous criminal on the loose
Mas Selamat, head of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist network in Singapore escaped from the Whitley Detention Centre while being taken to the toilet. The Whitley Detention Centre is in close proximity to Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS), raising some security concerns among parents and students.
Currently, the island-wide manhunt for the terrorist is still on going, and the police has stepped up security within the area and in areas where Mas could try to leave Singapore. It is speculated that there may be a network operating to facilitate Mas' escape. An independent investigation is currently underway.
If I were living elsewhere, I would not be overly surprised about this. That is not to covertly criticize the security or any country, but I find it hard to understand what has gone wrong with the escape of such a dangerous person. Shouldn't the security be stepped up when handling such criminals?
If the speculation of a larger network operation were true, this could easily turn into a fragile situation where Singaporeans live hang by the thread. Let's hope that the police find Mas as soon as possible and prevent him from escaping from, or hiding, in Singapore. Both of which has devastating consequences resulting in potential damages to life and property.
Anyone who seen Mas Selamat, please call the police hotline at 999.
